Claricode received the award for assisting Partners HealthCare and sponsor, Pfizer, with the development and integration of an EHR-based, spontaneous, triggered reporting system for Adverse Drug Events (ADE). Claricode, which specializes in healthcare software development, utilized Microsoft technologies to facilitate the transfer of data between multiple systems, originating from Partners Healthcare and reported back to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Currently, physicians report as few as 0.3% of adverse drug events (ADEs) to the Food and Drug Administration, a low reporting rate which has contributed to the widespread agreement that it takes too long to identify problem drugs and quantify risks of older drugs. ASTER, the ADE Spontaneous Triggered Reporting System, was developed with help from Claricode, to submit ADE reports directly from electronic health records (EHRs) - using data collected as part of routine care - to the FDA in a manner that was scalable and independent of a specific EHR. Consistent with recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, proactive, automated reporting imbedded within EHRs may improve public health by facilitating the submission of ADE reports. With an increased awareness of the importance of reporting, as evidenced by the many reporting requirements set forth within the HITECH Act, this solution exemplifies one way in which the future of meaningful reporting and careful analysis of collected data can help improve patient outcomes.
