Claricode wins Microsoft HUG 2010 Innovation Award

March 2, 2010

Waltham, MA (PRWEB) March 2, 2010 -- Claricode announced today that they have been recognized as the winner of the Microsoft Health Users Group 2010 Innovation Awards in the category of the Best Use of Clinical Records - Ambulatory. Claricode accepted the award with Partners HealthCare .

Claricode received the award for assisting Partners HealthCare and sponsor, Pfizer, with the development and integration of an EHR-based, spontaneous, triggered reporting system for Adverse Drug Events (ADE). Claricode, which specializes in healthcare software development, utilized Microsoft technologies to facilitate the transfer of data between multiple systems, originating from Partners Healthcare and reported back to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"We are delighted that Microsoft has recognized Claricode and Partners Healthcare for our innovative approach to implementing technology that facilitates information sharing," said Ken Tubman, CEO of Claricode. "The award demonstrates Claricode's deep proficiency and experience in developing innovative healthcare solutions for our clients."

Currently, physicians report as few as 0.3% of adverse drug events (ADEs) to the Food and Drug Administration, a low reporting rate which has contributed to the widespread agreement that it takes too long to identify problem drugs and quantify risks of older drugs. ASTER, the ADE Spontaneous Triggered Reporting System, was developed with help from Claricode, to submit ADE reports directly from electronic health records (EHRs) - using data collected as part of routine care - to the FDA in a manner that was scalable and independent of a specific EHR. Consistent with recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, proactive, automated reporting imbedded within EHRs may improve public health by facilitating the submission of ADE reports. With an increased awareness of the importance of reporting, as evidenced by the many reporting requirements set forth within the HITECH Act, this solution exemplifies one way in which the future of meaningful reporting and careful analysis of collected data can help improve patient outcomes.

"It seems like so many companies are idling in a holding pattern as they wait for the final Health IT requirements of ARRA. It is so refreshing to work with companies like Pfizer and Partners Healthcare who continue to surge forward, evolve and innovate. They are leaders, paving the way for change, instead of waiting to react to it. Organizations like this will prove to be the inspirational thought leaders of this era of healthcare reform. It is always exciting for Claricode to be a part of the success by assisting with the development and implementation of these innovations," said Tubman.

Claricode would like to recognize Pfizer for its support of the project, Michael A. Ibara, Head of Pharmacovigilance Information Management for Pfizer, for dreaming up the concept of ASTER, and Partners Healthcare for their continuous inspiration and dedication to bettering healthcare.

"Healthcare organizations contain a wealth of disparate clinical data, that when viewed holistically, can help achieve major strides in patient safety, quality of care and cost reduction," said Steve Aylward, general manager, U.S. Health and Life Sciences, Microsoft. "We are pleased to recognize Claricode and Partners Healthcare for their adverse drug event solution that demonstrates the possibilities of connecting disparate information."

Now in their 13th year of rewarding excellence in healthcare technology, the Microsoft HUG 2010 Innovation Awards showcase organizations that promote breakthroughs by enhancing the quality of patient care, reducing costs, streamlining clinical and business processes, driving interoperability, improving productivity and workflow, and enabling informed decisions. Award contestants are evaluated on how they provide significant business benefits to healthcare organizations and improve patient care.
